A dryer that runs without heating is the most common dryer repair call we receive in Kerrville TX. The drum spins, the timer ticks, and 60 minutes later clothes come out damp and cold. The frustrating part is the dryer appears to work — except for the one thing it is supposed to do.
The good news: this is almost always a single component failure — specifically the thermal fuse or heating element on electric dryers, or the igniter on gas dryers.
Confirm It Is a Heating Issue First
Before diagnosing, confirm the problem is actually no heat — not a ventilation blockage. A severely clogged exhaust duct causes the same "takes forever, clothes stay damp" symptom. Check the vent first:
- Disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer and run a short cycle
- If the dryer heats with the vent disconnected — the exhaust duct is the problem
- A clogged vent is also a fire hazard — clean it before reconnecting
Electric Dryer — Thermal Fuse Blown
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows permanently when the dryer overheats — almost always from a clogged vent. Once blown, the dryer runs but produces zero heat. It cannot be reset — it must be replaced.
Key detail: If you replace the fuse without fixing the clogged vent, it will blow again within weeks. We always replace the fuse and clean the full vent system in one visit.
Electric Dryer — Heating Element Failure
The heating element is a coiled wire that heats the air. When it burns out — a break in the coil wire — the dryer runs completely but produces no heat. Unlike the thermal fuse, element burnout is usually from age, not ventilation.
Gas Dryer — Failed Igniter
Gas dryers use an electric igniter to light the gas burner. When the igniter fails, the gas valve opens but nothing ignites — so the dryer runs but the burner never lights. You may notice a faint gas odor if the valve is opening without ignition.
Gas Dryer — Gas Valve Solenoid Coils
The gas valve solenoid coils open the valve to allow gas flow. When they fail, the valve stays closed and no gas reaches the burner. Telltale symptom: the igniter glows orange then goes out without a flame appearing. If you see this, it is almost certainly the solenoid coils.
Other Causes Worth Checking
- High-limit thermostat failure — cuts heat completely when it fails
- Cycling thermostat failure — controls operating temperature range
- Control board failure — not sending power to the heating circuit
- Timer failure (older mechanical models) — stuck, not advancing to heat cycle
Fire safety: Dryers cause approximately 2,900 home fires per year in the US. Failure to clean the dryer vent is the leading cause. If your dryer has been taking longer than normal recently, clean your vent immediately and call us for a safety inspection. See our full guide: Dryer Fire Safety Warning Signs.
